The Great Hunt Eurona Duology Wendy Higgins Books

I really enjoyed this book it was a refreshing YA romance with a tiny, and I mean tiny, amount of fantasy. I really wish we had gotten more world building and explanation of the lashed and where they came from. But this is a Wendy Higgins novel so I expect romance to be at the forefront.

The relationship between Aerity and Paxton actually didn't bother me as much as I thought it was going to. I think Wendy did a good job of having it slowly grow into something while still starting out with that fire.

There was a huge chunk of this book that was boring to me. The hunters were doing the same thing day in and day out and there was not enough going on to keep me fully invested in the story and the characters.

Overall, this was a good "light" read. It was light in the sense that it was not the typical high fantasy, intricate magic system I have been reading lately. This book is definitely not for everyone especially when it is marketed as a fantasy and definitely leans more towards romance centric rather than the fantasy aspect.

I look forward to seeing how Wendy Higgins ties everything up in the next book since this is one of those rare YA duologies.

The Great Hunt Eurona Duology Wendy Higgins Books Reviews

Writing style Dual POVs
Original e-book purchase date February 28, 2017
LAPL Audiobook reading/loan period April 29 - May 2, 2017
Dual format read – Yes or No? Partially, yes! I sort of forgot that I own the e-book, but I remembered to click through it towards the end of my listen. The e-book has a couple of cool extras the audiobook doesn’t have like the very helpful breakdown of who the characters are and a map of all the lands mentioned in the story.

Romance and Steam levels
A bit on the lower and more PG-13 side as is appropriate for a YA fantasy novel. Aerity, the oldest princess of Lochlanach, was mysteriously drawn and attracted to Paxton Seabolt, one of the realm’s lucky huntsmen who would win her hand in marriage if he succeeded in killing the great beast. Understandably, they don’t spend a lot of alone time together to indulge in much physical action of any sort. However, they do have a few brief moments of intimacy that caught them both by surprise. Their attraction was further complicated by the fact that Paxton was a Lashed, someone who had the ability to heal magically but couldn’t do so legally without serious consequences.

Most Annoying Villain
The beast that terrorized the kingdom of Lochlanach was the most obvious villain, but the award for most annoying villain goes to Rosaria Rocato. I never wished for a villain’s demise so fervently. Unfortunately, Rosaria was a cunning foe who escaped punishment for now. Curse her!

Story rating ★★★★☆
Wendy Higgins is one of my favorite YA authors, and I went into this novel semi-blind. I didn’t reread the synopsis before I started listening to it. The synopsis explains that this is a reimagining of a classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale. I actually can’t recall reading whatever that classic is. So, for me this was a completely fresh and imaginative story about a kingdom in peril and how its inhabitants were impacted by that. Gone now was Princess Aerity’s ability to choose her future mate for love. She’d be marrying now out of familial duty and honor.

I was sucked in right away by the world building, the drama of the hunt, the prejudice against the Lashed people and Princess Aerity’s ability to suck it up and bravely embrace her future. I eagerly listened to this captivating story every single opportunity I had during my work week and into my weekend full of errands and chores. The story ended with a significant cliffy.

Consequently, I was pretty bummed when there was an error with my download of the sequel, The Great Pursuit, that forced me to return the audiobook loan to my library prematurely. There are 2 library patrons ahead of me before I’ll be able to borrow the sequel in audiobook format and dive back into this world and discover what happens next for the Kingdom of Lochlanach.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Thanks to the publisher!

The Great Hunt wastes no time immersing the reader within its story. The first chapter opens up with death of Breckon Gillfin, Lady Wyneth’s betrothed. Breckon has been killed by a great beast that many have thought to be mythical, until now. Many deaths quickly follow Breckon’s and King Charles soon issues a proclamation stating that the hunter to kill the beast, will win his daughter’s, Princess Aerity, hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity is quite the likeable character. While Aerity may be more shy and reserved than most female protagonist in today’s young adult literature, she has a quiet strength about her. Although she dislikes her father’s proclamation, she agrees to it because it may be the only thing that will save the Lochlanach kingdom.

Aerity repeatedly puts other first before herself. Her relationship with her younger sister, Vixie, was sweet and enduring. While most older sisters would be annoyed or irritated when their younger wished to tag along, Aerity would welcome Vixie’s company. She also is skilled in acrobats, which I thought was a unique addition to her back story.

Aerity almost immediately has her eyes set on one of the hunter’s that appear for hunt, Paxton Seabolt. He is different than most. He is the only man to join the hunt that does not wish to win Aerity’s hand in marriage. He only joins the hunt because he truly wishes the beast dead. What Paxton does not expect is that the Princess is nothing like he imagined. She is kind, quiet, and smart. However, he still wishes nothing to do with her.

There is even a bit magic in this story. A group of people, called The Lashed Ones, possess magic. Ever since an evil Lashed attempted to take over the kingdom, The Lashed Ones have been social outcasts and are treated less than humans.

The Great Hunt is told from a third person point of view. While most point of views are from Aerity and Paxton, we get brief narrations from other characters within the story. This story focuses less on world-building and more on action. The main story is focused on killing the beast with a small subplot that will become the main plot in the second installment. The character descriptions are very colorful, with lots and lots of red hair. I thoroughly enjoyed the use of the region’s diction with its “ayes” and such.

The Great Hunt was such a quick read for me. I loved the fantasy aspect of the story, which only gets better the more you read and the romance was slow burning and heart breaking. It is the best and worst kind of romance an author can torture its readers with. I can’t believe I have to wait an entire year for the second installment. I will be reading the next book the second I get approved for a review copy!
