I am reading these Maria Kallio books in random order and I am absolutely thrilled with this interesting woman. Maria Kallio is not a character who would be convincing as an American. She is so definitively "other" – a true feminist, a free thinker, a woman in a position of responsibility, a committed life partner, a new mother. All these jobs are embraced with energy, intelligence, and an entirely human ambivalence. No, Maria Kallio is not an American.

Leena Lehtolainen has created a credible actor and narrator in her Maria Kallio. In this novel, Maria has moved from investigating crime as a police detective to beginning the practice of law. Yet her curiosity and dislike of loose ends remains consistent.

I am also impressed by the way Lehtolainen has framed the cases requiring Kallio's action. In this book, and the earlier My First Murder, the author has developed plots that involve a variety of people already known to Kallio. The solution of the case requires not only the collection and objective review of evidence, but also a sensitivity to each character's motives and their social attachments to the others. It's a job well done by the author.
This was not as interesting a crime situation as previous books in the series but the views of life in Finland continue to be entertaining.
The names of the characters were hard to keep straight because of the nationality but I have an idea if I just read more of these books I will get used to it I really did like the plot it was different than a lot of other books
This is the second book in the Maria Kallio series. I enjoyed this more than the first because there was more suspense and fewer characters with impossible names. My only complaint is that she doesn't include much of the uniqueness of Finland and its people.
This is the second in the Maria Kallio series. I have also read the third, and enjoyed each of them so far. There are murders, but very little detailed description. The stories are more based on how Maria tenaciously works through solving them. She is a character who is aware of, and accepts, her own faults, and someone I would enjoy knowing. Would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good story but does not enjoy a great deal of graphic violence and sex.
I enjoy Leena Lehtolainen's style of writing and reading about the main characters and their developing relationships (I am reading the series in order). Maria, now working as a lawyer, is living with Antti in his small village where everyone knows (or is related to) everyone, so the victim is known to Maria as well as the suspects, making the small village dynamics an interesting read as the crime is being solved. While it is sometimes difficult to keep track of the characters (not used to Finnish names), there is a helpful cast of characters list in the book.
Like the first entry in the Maria Kallio Finnish crime series, this second entry is OK but not compelling, The plot is an A to about G series of OK, let's look at this suspect, then let's look at that, then let's have a final face off with the killer! The solution is not hard to anticipate, and the antagonism between our heroine and an old line cop is all to easy to predict. The central character is moderately appealing, but gets irritating, and her personal problems seem to be in large part of her own making. BUT, the Finnish atmosphere is interesting, and the novel was gripping enough to keep me plugging on the end. As I said at the end of my review of Maria Kallio #1, it's good enough to make me order the next one ----
This is the second installment in the Maria Kallio series. While this is a very good detective series in it own right, the lead character really sets it apart. Maria is a sometimes police officer who despite a law degree cannot resist detective work. She is the most fully drawn female character in recent detective fiction surpassing Carol O' Connell's Mallory and Stieg Larsson's Salander. She is every bit the ace detective but also has a sex life, fashion foibles, and an incisive sense of humor. The sharp humor and writing in this series has more affinity to Raymond Chandler than to the other Scandinavian mystery writers. The story is set in Finland which has several consequences. The first is that many of the characters are connected to one another in complex ways reflecting the small size of a Finnish village. The second is that the names are complex and hard to keep track of for non-Fins. None of this matters though, as the story is well told and compelling from beginning to end. The ending makes sense and you believe that you really were given enough information to have solved the mystery. In other words, there are no silly tricks and much of the mystery depends on understanding the characters as opposed to some magical solution via forensic science. I read a lot of mysteries but this series really stands out as one of the best. I look forward to the next installment of Maria Kallio's story.
